Our Story

So many of you are trying to eat healthier these days, and that often means decreasing your consumption of dairy products, which are typically loaded with saturated fat and cholesterol. Or maybe you are driven to find non-dairy alternatives as a result of your concern with the treatment of animals and the effect of animal agriculture on the environment. In either case, finding delicious, healthy, non-dairy alternatives to satisfy that creamy, tangy sensation of dairy can often end in disappointment and frustration. Yeah, we’ve been there!
That’s why we started Red Lotus Foods: to create a product that tastes so close to the original that you will forget that you are eating something that is so much better for you, for the animals, and for the planet.
So whether you are a vegan, a die-hard carnivore, or somewhere in between, we think that you’ll find our cashew spreads, dips, and toppings to be so delicious in their own right that they deserve a place on your table.
Our products are all 100% vegan. They are fermented at room temperature and contain living organisms. Everything is made by hand using mostly organic ingredients and is unpasteurized. While quinoa is used to make the culture, our finished products contain no quinoa.

Who is whom?

Jeanne Petrus-Rivera, the founder of Red Lotus Foods, has led a life that could hardly be called boring. From international travel and living in Europe and Latin America, to six years on the west coast, and then back home to Cleveland in 2000, it has always been an adventure! Working in the hospitality industry for many years as a server, prep-cook, and bartender, teaching English as a Second Language to immigrants, making wire-wrap and beaded jewelry, creating sugar skulls for the Day of the Dead, and dancing her life away, Jeanne was always a vegan at heart, but not always in practice. Then seven years ago an acupuncturist recommended that she give up dairy to help with some health issues, and that was all the impetus she needed to drop all animal products for good. But she knows how hard it can be for people to “give up” some of their favorite foods, and she loves to spread the word about how you really just need to “veganize it!” That’s why Red Lotus Foods was born: to help people to make the switch from problematic dairy, to healthy and cruelty-free cashew-based products.

Alejandro Rivera is a self employed artist and entrepreneur, owner of Alejandro Rivera Photography and with his wife, Jeanne Petrus-Rivera, co-founder of Red Lotus Foods. He is a member of the Teatro Publico de Cleveland (TPC) He participate as an actor and also share his personal stories at this ensemble theatre company created by Cleveland Public Theatre. He is involved with multiple community organizations like: IRTF (Working for human rights in Central and South America) The Cleveland Vegan Society (Working for animal rights) He has a degree in Communications from ITESM-CQ (Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey Campus Querétaro). He is originally from Querétaro, México and moved to the US 17 years ago.
